Police officer

Brian McKitterick is the Officer in Charge at Torquay Police Station

What's been your experience of schoolies holidays?

I've policed Torquay and Anglesea over the last three schoolies periods as the Officer in Charge of the Torquay Police Station.

Did you go to schoolies when you left school?

No. There was no schoolies week in 1978. Generally school leavers had parties and a formal dinner.

What's your advice for young people thinking of drinking at schoolies?

Drink in moderation. Avoid spirits and have a buddy to look after you and vice versa.

What's your advice for young people thinking of taking drugs at schoolies?

Don't. Drug manufacturing is a seedy business and drugs such as ecstasy can be made up of anything. Overdoses are more common than the community thinks.

What's your advice for people thinking of having sex at schoolies?

It's a personal choice but you should show respect to your partner. Ensure you use protection. And remember, "no means no".

What's your advice for non-schoolies thinking of going to the celebrations?

If you attend a schoolies location, respect schoolies and behave appropriately. Anti-social behaviour by non-schoolies will be targeted by police on the Surf Coast and at other Victorian schoolies destinations.

How can young people have fun at schoolies without annoying the locals?

Reduce your noise level at your accommodation locations, particularly at holiday houses. Don't leave litter around in public places. Say hello to a local, especially the older members of the community. Communication can create good bonds between groups.

What do you think are the biggest problems young people face at schoolies?

Alcohol abuse and its side effects, which include aggression, loss of memory.

Also, victimisation from non-schoolies (toolies).

How can they avoid toolies and stay safe?

Reduce your alcohol intake and find other forms of entertainment. Stick with your mates and use a buddy system where you team up and look after each other.

What general advice do you have for young people going to schoolies?

Enjoy yourself but respect the rights of others. Make responsible choices and ensure you look after each other. If you have false ID to use at licensed venues, leave it at home. If you use it you will more than likely be caught and prosecuted.
